Scotty's Birthday

Scotty is now seven years old. Annie really wanted to throw him a birthday party. I hemmed and hawed for quite a while, made her come up with a budget for the party, and eventually gave in. Party-throwing is not my favorite pastime. I admire those who want to throw parties, though, and so I let Annie do her thing. Here are the invitations she made.

The morning of the party, Annie had to work really hard. She made decorations, helped me clean up, set up all of the painting supplies, printed out dinosaur pictures for a coloring book party favor, and made the cake. She decided just to do a box cake because that was easiest. Six of Scotty's friends came. She let them play for half an hour then called them in to start the painting lesson. She had a dinosaur theme for the party, so she had done an example painting earlier in the week, and she showed the kids how to do it. Aside from a little bit of joking about bodily functions, the kids were interested in the project. I think the most stressful part of it was everyone asking for more paint or more instructions or a different kind of brush or more water all at the same time. I did step in and help Annie a bit at this point. She was so cute and so thankful for my assistance.

After the painting, the kids went outside to play a little bit more while Annie cleaned up the art supplies. I also wanted to mention that Annie asked that I buy gesso (which she included in her budget) so that she could make economical canvases from cardboard.

Next was cake and ice cream. Annie had a very cute cake design and did her best with the amount of frosting we had.

Did the six and seven year olds care that we didn't have enough frosting? Not at all. And we had just enough ice cream--I had forgotten to buy extra for the party. There were a few different things we threw together at the last minute because this was Annie's first party, and she didn't think of everything. And I was really trying to let it be her thing and not take over. It was fun to see our resourcefulness and to see that it's really okay if everything isn't Pinterest-perfect. The fun part of a party is being together. And little kids are awesome because they are excited about everything. So maybe throwing a party doesn't need to be such a stressful thing in my mind. That's what I learned. Annie said she learned that being in charge of the party is a lot of work, and she can see why I don't want to do one every year.

After the cake, the kids did a dinosaur scavenger hunt. Annie hid about eight plastic dinosaurs and made a guide to tell the kids what to look for (including a color code for those who couldn't read). She put the kids into teams and said the first team to find all of the dinosaurs would get a prize. Then she gave me this look over their heads like, "I don't have a prize!" But we both knew we could come up with something. Her instinct was good that the prize would motivate the kids. Off they went, searching high and low. They loved it! Annie had thrown the scavenger hunt together that morning, and it was probably the best part. We got some leftover Easter jelly beans for the prize.

Lastly, Scotty opened presents. It is so funny to watch kids at a party when the presents come out. They can't help but crowd around the birthday kid and, in their anticipation, basically start opening the presents for him. It's adorable. Scotty got some fun presents--puzzles, games, gadgets, a science kit, books.

Annie's party was a grand success. All the moms told me their kid loved it. I had a lot of fun watching Annie host it.

We also had a little family party on Scotty's actual birthday. He chose hamburgers for dinner and requested a strawberry cake. Annie was sick with a fever that day, but you can hardly tell in the picture.

Scotty is a great kid. He is introverted, but he isn't shy necessarily. Watching him at co-op this year and at his little party, I can see that he is good at playing with other kids. He never tries to be the center of attention, but he kind of quietly holds his own. When he sits close to me, he will often put his arm around my shoulders. During scripture study, he will sometimes say, "Can you ask us questions and stuff?" I think he likes the new Come Follow Me curriculum that has helped us have more discussion as a family.
And he's missing lots of teeth. We didn't see the last one fall out. We think he swallowed it.

Easter

Our neighbors to the south, Joe and Anya and their family, are leaving next month. So we planned a last, Texas, Easter, hurrah get together. It was wonderful. We got to do everything with them that we wanted to, and it was great to be with family over a holiday.

They came on Saturday, and the kids first took them out to the woods to explore. The kids did crafts and ran around the yard. We also toured the house and had hot dogs for dinner. After that, we went to the dog park and got Andy's frozen custard, picked up and delivered by Aaron. Joe and Anya and their kids appreciated our favorite local treat like we hoped they would. And the weather was beautiful. The cloud of mosquitoes and gnats that descended upon us on our walk home on the trail was less pleasant, but we made it through.

That night, we put the younger kids to bed and then filled up plastic eggs with candy. Anya was very organized with each kid having a certain basket color and egg color, so that nobody fights over who found what egg first. The older girls are getting so mature and are fun to talk to.

Before church, we squeezed in some egg-dying. Fun for all ages!

After church, we made a ton of food (turns out 12 people don't need 72 dinner rolls) and had the egg hunt. We also got some cute pics of the kids in their Sunday best. Even the dog had an Easter dress:) Then we ate all the food and talked and played some more. It was a perfect day.

Aaron is in the bishopric now. He was called, then it was general conference, then normal church, then Easter. So we had that one normal church day and by Easter Sunday I was already like, "Oh, it's SO wonderful to have you home with no extra meetings!" Clearly, I need to build up my meeting stamina.

Joe and Anya and their kids are so great. We have been really blessed to live close to them. They are so fun and easy to talk to. They have such strong testimonies. They make you feel loved and happy when you are with them. They are humble and kind and generous. We are excited for their new adventures and will truly miss them.

Grandma and Grandpa McCombs!

I really, really needed my parents to come and see me. I'm so glad they were willing to drive hours and hours "on their way" home from their mission to see us in Texas. I looked forward so much to their visit, and it was just as great as I hoped it would be.

It was wonderful to hear about their mission. They had so many great experiences in just the eight months they were there. I think they really made a difference. I'm grateful to be related to such amazing, capable, spiritual people who want to share their time and love and efforts with others. Including us! I love talking to my parents. We have wonderful conversations about interesting topics. And they are always invest a lot of time and energy into building relationships with my kids. I love that!

We took them to the Zilker Botanical Gardens. Saw lots of cool fish and flowers and had a picnic, which was apparently against the rules. Dad had a wheelchair due to his need for a hip replacement.

We also rode the Zilker Zephyr again. We'd done it before with our Dennis grandparents. It was just as fun the second time around! Scotty's allergies have passed, so he was able to enjoy being outside. Annie was also so excited to have Grandma and Grandpa watch her play volleyball. And her team won the game!

Here's my dad playing ball with the kids, in spite of his bad hip.

Grandma and Grandpa also played lots of game and bought Annie and Scotty a bunch of delicious ice cream. We ate Torchy's and Rudy's. We watched movies. Grandma was the sewing queen. She altered dresses and skirts for me and Annie. They also got to come to church with us, and mom and I painted bluebonnets at a RS activity. It was really so nice to have them here. I felt like a well-watered plant after their visit. And having them come, having visitors, made our house feel more like a home. Thanks for coming, Mom and Dad! You're the best!

Home Owners!!

Our lease was going to end in February, so we had to decide whether or not to renew. We thought we'd just contact a realtor our friends had recommended and look around a little. So in December we went and looked at three houses. While we were looking at these three (uninspiring) houses, I pointed out to our realtor another house in the same neighborhood that was "coming soon." It was a house I had seen when I went to check out this neighborhood with the kids on our bikes. We were checking out the neighborhood because we'd seen a house online that we liked. Aaron and the kids had driven by and really liked the neighborhood. So I went to check it out (on the bikes) and saw this outwardly lovely "coming soon" house. Then I pointed it out to the realtor when we were in the neighborhood. She called the sellers' realtor then and there. And she said we could get in to see the house after Christmas.

So all during Christmas, I kind of dreamed about this house. I told family about it and just imagined what it might be like inside. I felt drawn to this house. I liked the neighborhood and the exterior. The day after we got home from Christmas vacation, I went with the realtor to see it. And the dream house turned out to be a dream! I really, really liked it! Aaron did, too. So this was only the 4th house we saw, but we decided to put an offer on it. The rest is history (and also recorded in my journal, so I won't bore you with the details here.)

As I'm typing this out, I am thinking how similar it is to when I was shopping for a husband:) I remember it was right before Christmas I was feeling kind of bored with life, looking for some renewal (like our lease). I went with my roommate McKelle (my realtor) and her boyfriend Trustin to hand out some leftovers from a ward activity. We ended up at Aaron's apartment. I was like, where have you been all my life? (visiting the neighborhood) I developed a crush on him right there. I looked him up in the ward directory (like zillow, redfin, etc.) and basically started stalking him. Shortly after Christmas, I went to visit my sister Felicia and told her that I was interested in this guy Aaron. And I tried to find opportunities to flirt with him. During the summer, I went home and thought a lot about Aaron even though I didn't know him that well, (like when I hadn't even seen the inside of the house) and when I came back in the fall, we started dating. Then he made an "offer" and...bam! Married. Apparently I'm really good at the whole love-at-first-sight thing.

So here's our house.
I just love the bent tree in the front yard. It helps to give the house character, no?

Will I like having this one, big, living/eating/cooking room? In theory, I do. In reality, it's kind of depressing to always be able to see your dirty dishes. Good thing there's a deep sink! But I do like not having to leave the action in the living room in order to stir something in the kitchen.

Cutest half-bath ever!

Upstairs toy/game room

Master bedroom and bathroom (which are upstairs)

Scotty's Room

Annie's Room

Kids' Bathroom

Guest room (Come visit us!!)

Laundry Room (also upstairs)

The backyard has been awesome! The kids really do play out there a lot. And I love seeing the trees. I think it will be even cooler when they are full of leaves.

There definitely is a different feeling to owning a house instead of renting it. I thought it would be easier...this is my house, I can do whatever I want! But it's more stressful in a way...how will that affect our resale value? Yet it also naturally gives you more love and commitment to the house to be the owner. I'm happy to be here. I'm feeling really grateful for my blessings. The house is great! But it's already very clear that this house is not my greatest blessing. The people who live in it are. And I already know that we can be happy anywhere...I know we aren't going to be any happier here than we were in our 700 ft square basement apartment in Provo. It really is the love and the people that make a home.
