Scotty's Soccer & Annie's Bakes

We had a long, hot soccer season. Usually it doesn't get deathly hot until the end of May, but every week was a near death experience at Scotty's soccer games this spring. But it was still a fun season. I like watching Scotty play. Last year he ended up on a really experienced, dedicated team. And that was a cool experience. This year he was one of four players who had ever played before. So he had to step up his game, and it was fun to see him do that. He scored four goals, I think. Here Scotty is with his friend Trey who is a genius at every sport he plays. We were lucky to have him on the team!

It was so hot. We were driven to desperate measures. This was Annie's attempt to get a bit of shade. Another attempt was bringing our umbrella. That probably would have worked, except it was broken. And it was a windy day. So Aaron looked like a doofus clinging onto the handle, but he was a doofus who was approximately four degrees cooler than he would have been without it.

Speaking of sports, Annie had an awesome volleyball season earlier this years. She started to understand the advantage of height in the world of sports. She improved a lot and got to play on a team with two of her best friends from co-op. And I got to team coach with my awesome friend, Kayley. On the last game of the season, the championship game, we only had these four players show up. In volleyball at this level, it was actually an advantage--less time spent wondering who should go for the ball while they watch it drop to the floor. These kids worked so hard on that last game. It was really fun to watch.

But Annie has also been on a baking kick lately. Cakes. Lots of cakes. She bakes them and then feeds them to the co-op kids. Aaron doesn't particularly love cake, and so he didn't want our dessert budget (for our stomachs, not our wallets) "spent" on cake. Hungry children come in handy sometimes. Annie is developing some serious decorating skills. She learns from Youtube, not her mother.
By the way, Scotty turned 10 years old! He is an awesome kid! He is funny, sometimes on purpose and sometimes not. I still think of him as somewhat nervous about socializing and new situations, but he is getting more and more confident. He still likes to observe and watch first, but he is also learning to jump in and have a good time. Sometimes his social skills surprise me--how far he has come and how much more socially adept he is than I was at that age. He definitely has the silliness of a ten year old boy, but he can also be serious and thoughtful. He is responsible and remembers his commitments. He hates cleaning up. I think it's because he's a bit of a perfectionist. Usually he will cope with his dislike of cleaning by having me tell him exactly what to do, one task at a time. And then he is pretty good at doing it. And Annie decorated his birthday cake as seen above and below this paragraph.
It's fun to watch the kids pursue things that they love and learn new skills--ones that I share and, even more so, ones that I don't. I like these guys!
